Fishing in the Keys, Home decor, Art

To the left is a photo of a Sumi ink set
used to create these fish prints, also
known as fish rubbings and Gyotaku.

Sumi Ink sticks are rubbed by hand on a
special stone, with a little water to make
ink. For more than one thousand years,
the method of making Sumi stick has
    remained the same.

The Suzuri is a flat grinding stone used
to make Sumi ink. It has a sloping
indentation which forms a small well
at one end.  Assorted brushes shown are used to
apply the ink directly to prepared fish.
Rice paper is then placed over the fish
and gently rubbed to produce the print.
